Sometimes the photograph you never planned to make becomes the one that tells the story best.
We were leaving Prince William Sound and making our way back toward Anchorage when Alaska brought us to a temporary standstill. The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, the remarkable single-lane passage connecting Whittier with the Portage Valley, operates on scheduled openings as vehicles and trains take turns crossing through the mountain.
So we waited.
Rather than watch the minutes pass, I sent my drone into the late-afternoon sky.
Below me, a brilliant turquoise glacial river rushed through the Chugach landscape, tumbling over immense stone and disappearing into a corridor of deep green. Beyond it, the mountains opened just enough to reveal a distant glimpse of ice, a quiet reminder of the ancient glaciers responsible for carving this extraordinary landscape.
There was no plan for this photograph. No destination marked on a map. No carefully scheduled arrival for perfect light.
There was simply an unexpected pocket of time.
And instead of waiting for the journey to continue, I looked for what was already there.
“Borrowed Time” is a reminder that some of the most remarkable moments arrive disguised as interruptions. Sometimes the road closes. Sometimes you have to wait. And sometimes, if you are willing to look beyond where you thought you were going, the pause becomes the destination.
