Alaska rarely whispers.
On this morning in Prince William Sound, the landscape seemed determined to prove it. From the boat, I watched an enormous rush of water descend toward the sea, exploding against dark, moss-covered rock with a force that was impossible to ignore.
Instead of pulling back to photograph the waterfall in its entirety, I chose to move visually into it. I wanted the water itself to become the landscape, capturing the spray suspended in the air, the fragments of rock appearing beneath it, and the extraordinary movement unfolding in front of me.
The result borders on abstraction. Water, stone and wilderness collide until it becomes difficult to tell where one ends and another begins. Yet along the bottom of the frame, the ancient rock remains, grounded beneath all that motion.
For me, Rush of the Wild holds the spirit of Prince William Sound exactly as I experienced it that morning: cold, powerful, remote and completely untamed.
