The Blue King

Botswana, Africa

Collector's Reserve Edition · Limited to 50 · Signed & Numbered

Some photographs simply refuse to be subtle.

I photographed this Woodland Kingfisher in Botswana, and from the moment I returned to the image, I knew the color deserved to be celebrated. That extraordinary blue, the flash of red across its bill, and the quiet confidence of its profile gave me something that felt almost too perfectly designed to exist in nature.

What I love most is the contradiction. For all that brilliant color, there is a wonderful composure to this bird. Perched quietly and looking beyond the frame, it seems completely unaware of how spectacular it is.

And perhaps that is what makes The Blue King one of my favorites.

The Woodland Kingfisher is an especially interesting African species because, despite its name, it is strongly associated with woodland and savanna and often hunts insects and other prey from a perch rather than relying primarily on fish. Botswana, particularly its northern regions and Okavango woodlands, is an important part of its southern African range.

The Blue King completes a small collection of four African bird portraits I chose to bring into the SLG.Art Collectors Reserve. Each is different in character and color, but together they represent something I discovered while photographing Africa: sometimes the smallest subjects can leave an unexpectedly large impression.

This one feels like the perfect final note.
