At Crescent Lake, Alaska, the wilderness has a way of reminding you exactly whose world you have entered. Reaching this remote and highly restricted landscape is an experience in itself, but standing within it as an Alaska brown bear moves through the water only yards away changes the scale of everything.
I photographed this bear in mid-stride, her wet coat catching the light as water scattered beneath her paw. What captivated me was not simply her size or strength. It was her purpose. Her eyes were fixed ahead, her body moving with an assurance that belonged entirely to the wild.
I wanted to preserve that feeling in The Crossing.
Rather than create the intensely sharpened wildlife image we so often see, I approached this photograph as a portrait. The darkness of the surrounding forest falls away behind her, while the light traces the extraordinary texture of her coat and separates her from the landscape. The open space ahead gives her somewhere to go, leaving the moment intentionally unfinished.
Crescent Lake is one of Alaska's extraordinary wilderness destinations, tucked within the vast landscape of Lake Clark National Park and Preserve and accessible primarily by small aircraft. Photographing brown bears here, in their natural habitat and on their terms, was one of the great privileges of my journey through Alaska.
For a fraction of a second, water, light and movement came together.
