The Esteemed

Prince William Sound, Alaska

Open Edition

There are certain photographs you know, even as you are taking them, that you may never have the opportunity to make again.

On Prince William Sound in Alaska, I found myself staring through my lens at one of the most iconic subjects in American wildlife photography: a bald eagle, perched high upon the weathered remains of an old tree. I could feel the pressure to get it exactly right.

But “right” for me did not mean creating the ultra-sharp, high-contrast wildlife image so often associated with photographing an eagle. I wanted something different.

For nearly two decades, much of my photographic life was spent creating portraits of people. That history followed me to Alaska, and in this moment, I found myself approaching this magnificent bird almost as I would an esteemed portrait subject. I wanted the light to feel graceful, the background to fall softly away, and the eagle’s unmistakable strength to exist alongside a sense of dignity and quiet presence.

Perched above the wilderness of Prince William Sound, its white crown illuminated against the muted Alaskan landscape, the eagle seemed less like a subject I had found and more like a portrait I had been given permission to make.

The Esteemed is my interpretation of an American icon, photographed not simply as wildlife, but as a portrait of strength, independence, and extraordinary grace.
