By late afternoon, Crescent Lake had begun to feel different.

I had spent the day photographing bears from a pontoon boat in one of Alaska's most extraordinary wilderness settings. Then, toward the end of our journey, we encountered her. Alone in the water.

She wasn't chasing salmon or moving with urgency. She simply waded through the lake, quietly studying her surroundings, seemingly aware of everything around her.

Photographed at approximately 4:00 in the afternoon, the lowering light caught the edges of her wet fur and illuminated the tips of her ears while the cool waters of Crescent Lake surrounded her. Through my lens, the immense power normally associated with an Alaskan brown bear seemed to soften.

For a few moments, she appeared almost contemplative. That is what I wanted to preserve.

Not simply a portrait of an Alaska brown bear, but the intelligence, awareness and quiet presence behind her eyes. In a wilderness where survival demands constant attention, I was given a glimpse of something remarkably intimate.

One bear. One lake. One quiet gaze into a world entirely her own.
