At Crescent Lake, Alaska, nearly every bear I encountered seemed to be in motion. Fishing. Searching. Wandering the shoreline. Moving with the purpose that defines life in the Alaskan wilderness.
And then there was him. He was an older brown bear, affectionately regarded as something of a 'grandpa bear,' and apparently he had earned the right to take life a little slower.
When I photographed this moment, he wasn't chasing salmon or asserting his strength. He was sitting quietly along the shore, staring at ants. That was exactly what I wanted to preserve.
I framed the photograph tightly because I wanted his enormous paws to remain part of the portrait. They reveal the extraordinary power he carries, while his lowered eyes and relaxed posture tell an entirely different story. For just a moment, this magnificent wild animal seemed vulnerable, gentle and almost impossibly sweet.
Getting to Crescent Lake is an experience in itself, accessible only by small aircraft and far removed from the places most travelers will ever reach. To sit within this bear's world and witness such an unguarded moment felt like an extraordinary privilege.
Wildlife photography often celebrates action. The Gentle Giant celebrates stillness. And perhaps that is why, among all the bears I photographed in Alaska, I find him so unforgettable.
