The Secret Path

Rain had followed us through Iceland that day, softening the landscape beneath a veil of mist and turning every surface deeper, richer, more alive.
From the ground, Gjáin was beautiful. From above, it became something else entirely.
I sent my drone into the gray Icelandic sky and watched as an extraordinary world began to unfold beneath me. Water seemed to appear from everywhere, spilling through ancient lava, threading between moss-covered rock and gathering in brilliant pools of glacial blue. Autumn had already begun painting the landscape in shades of amber, rust and gold.
And then I saw the path.
A pale ribbon winding quietly through the chaos of water and color, almost as though it had been placed there to lead the way into another world.
Gjáin is a hidden gorge in the Þjórsárdalur Valley of South Iceland, in the shadow of the Hekla volcano. Here, the Rauðá River spills over ancient lava and basalt in countless streams and small cascades, carving a green oasis into an otherwise stark volcanic landscape.
Perhaps that is what I love most about this image. Everything is moving. Water is rushing, seasons are changing, rain is falling, and yet that small path remains, quietly finding its way through it all.
There are photographs that document a place.
And then there are photographs that remind us that sometimes the most beautiful part of a journey is discovering where the path leads.
The Secret Path is my aerial portrait of that discovery.
