Undertow

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Open Edition

I didn't want to photograph the ocean from a distance. I wanted to bring you directly into it.

While photographing the powerful surf in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, I became captivated by the extraordinary energy of a breaking wave. The force, the movement, the collision of water against water. I wanted to capture that split second when the ocean seems to explode, surrounding everything in its path.

The result is Undertow.

Deep midnight blues collide with brilliant turquoise as sunlight penetrates the crest of the wave. Thousands of droplets are suspended in motion, creating an almost sculptural composition of water, light, and raw energy.

By eliminating the horizon and surrounding landscape, I wanted to remove any sense of distance between the viewer and the ocean. Rather than simply observing the wave, I wanted you to feel as though you were standing within it, surrounded by its extraordinary power.

What fascinates me most about this photograph is the contrast. The darkness of the deeper water, the luminous turquoise breaking through, and the incredible texture of the whitewater as it surges forward. There is beauty here, but there is also tremendous strength.

Undertow is my interpretation of the ocean at its most commanding. Unpredictable, relentless, and impossible to control.

Presented as museum-grade acrylic fine art photography, the depth of the blues, luminous turquoise tones, and intricate detail of the crashing surf create a dramatic statement piece for contemporary interiors.
