Wonderland

Some photographs preserve what I saw. Others somehow preserve what I felt.
Wonderland is the latter.
I photographed this scene shortly after our boat departed into Prince William Sound, Alaska. At the base of a waterfall, water thundered against the dark rock, exploding into mist and catching the light in a way that seemed almost impossible. Beneath it, the cold Alaskan water shifted between shades of turquoise and deep blue. From the very beginning, the day felt less like somewhere I had traveled and more like somewhere I had wandered into.
A Wonderland.
But this photograph carries another story for me. I sometimes bring a small amount of my dad's ashes with me when I travel, taking him to places he never had the opportunity to see. That day, somewhere within the extraordinary wilderness of Prince William Sound, I released some of his ashes into the water.
Looking back at this image, I find myself wondering what he would have thought of it all. The mountains. The waterfalls. The impossible colors. The vastness of Alaska. Would it have felt like a Wonderland to him, too?
Perhaps that is why I chose to interpret this photograph the way I did. I didn't want it simply to document the bottom of an Alaskan waterfall. I wanted it to feel like the memory of that entire day: luminous, mysterious, slightly dreamlike, and almost too beautiful to be real.
In some small way, Wonderland is the photograph of how I hope my dad might have seen that day beside me.
