There are some mornings that feel as though they were waiting for you.
I photographed A Birthday in Gold just outside Aspen, Colorado, immediately after sunrise on my birthday, in the heart of the autumn season. The mountains were beginning to catch the new morning light while brilliant golden aspens swept across the valley below. But it was the delicate layer of fog resting close to the ground that stopped me.
For a few fleeting moments, the mist softened the meadow and separated the glowing trees from the rugged Colorado mountains beyond. Above it all, clouds moved through a brilliant blue sky, creating a landscape filled with both strength and softness.
Perhaps because it was my birthday, I was especially aware of the gift of simply being there. Another year, another journey, another extraordinary corner of this world waiting to be photographed.
A Birthday in Gold is my celebration of Colorado in mid-fall, when the aspens turn the mountainsides to gold and even an ordinary morning can feel like a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
