Growing up in Seattle, Seafair Sunday wasn't simply another summer weekend. It was an event. The sound of the Blue Angels overhead was part of the rhythm of summer, something my family and so many Seattle families anticipated year after year.
Years later, standing behind my camera and watching that unmistakable formation take shape in my viewfinder, the experience felt completely different.
This time, I wasn't simply watching the Blue Angels. I was photographing them my way.
I wanted to move beyond the traditional aviation photograph and create something that felt almost painterly: four brilliant Navy aircraft suspended against a sweeping Seattle sky, their precision and power contrasted by the softness and warmth surrounding them.
There is something extraordinary about photographing a subject that belongs to your childhood. For me, this image carries decades within it: the Seattle summers I remember, the excitement of Seafair, and the photographer I eventually became.
Above the Sound is my interpretation of an enduring Seattle tradition, transformed from a childhood memory into fine art.
