Edge of the Storm
Lóndrangar, Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Iceland
Iceland was showing us exactly what it was made of that day.
Gale-force winds swept across the Snæfellsnes Peninsula as one weather system after another moved through. Rain. Mist. Heavy clouds. Fleeting light. Nothing stayed the same for long.
And then there was Lóndrangar.
Rising from Iceland's rugged Atlantic coastline, these ancient basalt sea stacks are remnants of a volcanic crater slowly carved away by thousands of years of wind, water and relentless North Atlantic weather. What remains are two monumental towers of rock, standing like the ruins of some forgotten fortress at the edge of the sea.
This photograph is different from much of my work.
I am often drawn toward beautiful light, brilliant color and those extraordinary moments when a landscape seems to glow. But Iceland began pulling something different from me. I found myself embracing the darkness. The fog. The storms. The places where light didn't dominate the scene, but fought its way into it.
That is what I love about this image.
Through the gloom, a ribbon of light broke across the Atlantic, illuminating the water while Lóndrangar remained almost silhouetted against the storm. For a fleeting moment, darkness and light existed together.
I didn't want to make Iceland look prettier than it was.
I wanted to photograph exactly how it felt.
Wild. Ancient. Unforgiving. Magnificent.
The deep blacks, muted earth tones and metallic light across the water take on remarkable dimension beneath acrylic, allowing the artwork to shift subtly as the surrounding light changes throughout the day.
