There are places on Earth that seem to belong to another world.
High above Iceland's volcanic wilderness, I watched the landscape unfold beneath me in layers of color, texture and time. Three ancient volcanic forms rose from an immense expanse of black earth, their rims still carrying extraordinary shades of crimson, violet, rust and gold. Beyond them, water carved its way through the darkness before disappearing toward distant mountains beneath a gathering Icelandic sky.
From the ground, Iceland had already overwhelmed me. From the air, it became something else entirely.
This was the perspective I had come searching for.
I have always been drawn to landscapes that remind us how small our own chapter is compared with the story of the Earth. Here, that story felt almost visible. Fire had shaped the land. Water continued to sculpt it. Wind swept across it. And for one fleeting moment, light revealed colors that seemed impossible against the volcanic terrain.
I raised the drone higher and composed the three formations vertically, allowing them to lead the eye deep into the Icelandic wilderness. What I saw on my screen barely seemed real. It felt less like photographing a landscape and more like looking backward through time.
Fireborn is my interpretation of an Iceland still being written by the elements, a place where creation and destruction have always been part of the same story.
