First Light
Aspen, Colorado
There are moments on the road when the destination simply has to wait.
Driving through the mountains near Aspen, Colorado, on a winding highway just as morning began to break, I caught sight of something that made me pull over. Across the mountainside, the first sunlight of the day was beginning to find the autumn aspens, setting their brilliant gold leaves ablaze against the deep blue-green shadows of the surrounding evergreens.
The night had not completely surrendered. Wisps of mist still hung between the trees, softening the distant forest and creating layer after layer across the mountainside.
I stood there watching as the light moved through the landscape, illuminating one grove and then another. For a few fleeting minutes, Colorado seemed suspended between night and day, cool mist below and warm autumn light above.
I had been headed somewhere else that morning.
But sometimes the photograph is found in the moment that makes you stop.
“First Light” captures the extraordinary fall color of the Colorado Rocky Mountains near Aspen, where golden aspen trees, mountain forest, morning mist and sunrise converged for one quiet moment at the beginning of a new day.
