Glory

Antelope Canyon, Page, Arizona

Open Edition

There are places that ask you to look around. Antelope Canyon asks you to look up.

I photographed Glory inside Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona, where midday sunlight descended into the narrow passageways and transformed the sandstone into something almost luminous. Brilliant gold and amber collided with deep crimson and scarlet, while a window of blue Arizona sky appeared high above the canyon walls.

Standing beneath it, I understood again why Antelope Canyon has become one of the most revered photographic landscapes in the American Southwest. Its extraordinary sandstone formations have inspired some of the world's most celebrated fine-art photographs, yet no two moments within these walls are ever quite the same. Light shifts. Colors deepen. Shapes appear and disappear. What exists for one photographer may be gone for the next.

For me, it was the upward view that made this moment unforgettable.

The sandstone seemed to rise like the walls of a natural cathedral, sculpted not by human hands, but by water, wind and unimaginable stretches of time. Then the sunlight found its way inside, illuminating the canyon in gold.

When I later looked at the image, one word came to me.

Glory.
