There are moments when the landscape seems to orchestrate everything at once.
I photographed Heaven & Earth from Lipan Point along the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, beneath weather that could not have been more perfect. Brilliant sunshine spilled across the canyon walls, illuminating layer after layer of ancient stone, while an extraordinary ceiling of clouds gathered across the distant horizon.
And then came the element I could never have planned: a magnificent rain shaft descending from the clouds in the distance, framed by sunlight breaking through above the canyon.
The contrast was remarkable. Warm desert light against approaching weather. Sun and rain occupying the same immense landscape. The Colorado River winding far below through millions of years of geological history.
It was one of those rare moments when being in exactly the right place at exactly the right time was enough. I simply had to recognize it and press the shutter.
