There are places where the landscape seems to close around you, drawing you deeper into shadow, stone and silence. And then, suddenly, you look up.
I photographed Into the Blue inside Rattlesnake Canyon near Page, Arizona, during the intensity of midday light. Far below the desert sky, the narrow sandstone walls came alive around me in extraordinary layers of crimson, scarlet, magenta, orange and gold. Above, a slender opening revealed brilliant blue sky and drifting white clouds, creating a striking contrast between the enclosed world of the canyon and the openness beyond it.
What captivated me was that sense of movement upward. The sweeping curves of the sandstone seem almost to reach toward the sky, while centuries of erosion remain etched into every line and contour of the canyon walls.
In a place carved slowly by water, wind and time, I found myself drawn to the one thing that felt completely limitless.
