He wasn't putting on a show. He was just passing through.
I photographed this elephant in Botswana shortly before sunset, moving quietly through tall African grasses beneath a sky that seemed considerably more interested in being dramatic than he was.
That contrast is what I love about this photograph.
An elephant carries such extraordinary presence that it would have been easy to make the image feel imposing. Instead, I wanted something more approachable. I wanted him to simply be an elephant in his world, strolling through the grass at the end of the day, completely unconcerned with creating a moment for my camera.
Converting the photograph to black and white allowed me to strip away some of the expected visual language of an African safari. The grasses became texture. The enormous tree became an anchor. The clouds became movement. And against all of it, the elephant remained wonderfully uncomplicated.
Just Passing Through is a quieter portrait of Botswana wildlife. Not an encounter defined by spectacle, but by presence.
Sometimes an extraordinary subject doesn't need to do anything extraordinary at all.
