The Monolith

Totem Pole, Monument Valley, Arizona

Open Edition

Rising from the desert floor like a monument to time itself, the famous Totem Pole of Monument Valley is one of the most extraordinary sandstone formations in the American Southwest. Tall, slender, and seemingly defying gravity, this remarkable natural sculpture has been shaped by millions of years of erosion, standing in dramatic contrast to the massive sandstone cliffs surrounding it.

I photographed this iconic formation at sunset, when the final light of the day transformed the landscape into an incredible display of color. The sandstone glowed with fiery copper and rich orange tones, while the sky exploded into deep shades of violet, magenta, and gold. The contrast was extraordinary, and for a brief moment, the entire landscape seemed illuminated from within.

What drew me to this composition was the sheer presence of the Totem itself. Despite its slender profile, it commands the entire landscape. I wanted to emphasize its remarkable height and solitary strength while incorporating the surrounding cliffs, textured desert sands, and golden grasses that give this extraordinary place its unmistakable character.

Located within Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park on the Navajo Nation, this iconic formation is a testament to the immense power of nature and the passage of time.

The Monolith captures more than a famous landmark. It represents endurance, strength, and the remarkable beauty of a landscape that has stood against the elements for countless generations.

Presented on museum-grade acrylic, the rich desert colors, intricate sandstone textures, and luminous sunset sky take on exceptional depth and dimension. Available in sizes up to an impressive 60 x 90 inches, this artwork is designed to make a commanding statement in luxury residences, contemporary interiors, and expansive gallery spaces.
