Toward the Light
Owl Canyon, Page, Arizona
There is something extraordinary about standing deep within a slot canyon and looking toward the sky.
I photographed “Toward the Light” in Owl Canyon near Page, Arizona, during the middle of the afternoon, when the desert sun was high overhead. From within the canyon, that brilliant light became a destination, illuminating the ancient sandstone while the towering walls around me disappeared into shadow.
I chose to present this image in black and white to strip the landscape down to its most elemental forms: light, darkness, texture and time. Without color, every curve carved into the sandstone becomes more pronounced, revealing the layers and flowing lines created by centuries of wind and water.
What draws me most to this photograph is the journey through it. The eye begins within the darkness of the canyon, follows the sculpted walls inward, and eventually arrives at that brilliant opening above.
Sometimes the path forward is not completely illuminated.
Sometimes all we need is enough light to keep moving toward it.

Dark Brown Float Frame
A warm, natural wood float frame with rich grain and dark espresso tones. The floating mount brings dimension and an organic elegance to the piece.

Acrylic Mount
The photograph is face-mounted behind optically-clear museum-quality acrylic, creating extraordinary depth, luminosity, and a contemporary floating effect on the wall.
