Long before I noticed the individual footprints, I was drawn to the lines.
I photographed this scene in Namibia in the early morning, when the low sun was moving across the dunes at an angle and turning every indentation in the sand into light and shadow. The surface suddenly became a record of everything that had passed through it.
Human tracks descend the great dunes, crossing and overlapping as they make their way toward the desert floor. Below them, smaller animal tracks travel horizontally across the landscape, following an entirely different path. Two journeys. Two directions. One extraordinary canvas created by the desert itself.
That contrast is what gave this piece its name: Tracks.
I love that the people themselves are absent from the photograph. We know they were there only because of what they left behind. The animals are invisible too. Their presence is recorded in exactly the same way. For one brief morning, the Namibian sand held the evidence of both.
The weathered tree at the base of the composition became an unexpected anchor for me. Against the immense geometry of the dunes, it feels almost sculptural, another remnant shaped by a landscape where wind, sun and time are constantly rewriting what we see.
I photographed Tracks early enough to capture those long shadows intentionally. Without them, many of these marks would nearly disappear. With them, every footprint, ridge and passage becomes part of the artwork.
For me, this is less a photograph of a sand dune than a portrait of passage: where we have been, where something else has been, and how briefly the earth keeps the evidence.
