Where the Earth Surrenders

Anchorage, Alaska

Open Edition

Some landscapes reveal themselves by asking you to look in a different direction.

I photographed this aerial image above Anchorage, Alaska, on a hazy day when the sky offered little of what I had hoped to capture. So instead of looking toward the horizon, I turned my attention downward, and discovered something far more compelling beneath me.

From above, the landscape becomes almost abstract. Rich greens and golds of the Alaskan wetlands slowly give way to winding tidal channels, muted earth, and finally the deep blue of the sea. There is no abrupt boundary. The land seems to evolve into water, changing texture and color as one world quietly surrenders to another.

That natural transition inspired something new for me.

Where the Earth Surrenders is the first artwork in my developing When the Land Meets the Sea collection, a series devoted to the places where coastlines, rivers, wetlands and oceans converge. Photographed primarily from above, the collection will explore the extraordinary patterns, colors and formations created at the meeting point between earth and water.

Sometimes the photograph you set out to make isn't the photograph waiting for you. Sometimes, you simply have to change where you're looking.
