Deep within Antelope Canyon in Page, Arizona, the desert reveals an architecture entirely its own.
I photographed Cathedral of Stone from within the narrow sandstone passageways, where thousands of years of wind and water have carved the canyon walls into sweeping curves, deep chambers, and seemingly impossible formations. Stripped of color, the landscape becomes something different. Light, shadow, texture, and form take over.
My eye was drawn immediately toward the opening at the heart of the canyon. Light pours through the darkness, catching the edges of the sandstone before disappearing again into shadow. In black and white, those layers become almost sculptural, revealing details that color can sometimes conceal.
There is a sense of movement here, as though the stone itself is folding and turning toward the light.
